Does Christianity Have A Class System?

When I lived in London a few years back, one of the cultural norms that I observed was the distinct line between the working class and the upper class.  There was a clear divide in society among the classes and there were few social intersections between them.  That’s not to say that there is not an ever-present social divide here in America between socioeconomic groups; there is.  Perhaps it took me living overseas and to observe it among a different culture for it to provide a contextual basis of understanding.   There seems to be an ever-growing divide among Christians as well, although not well-defined or articulated.  I’m not speaking of denominations here, but of specific labels that do no justice to the Christian faith:

  • Cultural Christian
  • Biblical Christian
  • Sunday Christian
  • Casual Christian
  • Secular Christian

Maybe I should add ‘Controversial Christian’ to the list.  My point here is that there seems to be a grading system among those that participate in the Christian faith and the need to put forth some identification on where someone is on this false Christian scale.  The term Christian no longer seems to depict a person who follows Christ, but rather a dividing line between social views, political causes, and moral ideology.  I almost prefer not to use the term Christian as there are so many misrepresentations of the term.

How do we put Christ back in Christianity?
